Demographic development of the world population suggests the continual shift toward the population ageing. This effect may be clearly seen in developed countries of the European Union. The aim of the article is to analyze basic demographic and economic characteristics of the European Union as a whole and also of individual member states. We try to find similar and different characteristics of groups of member countries based on cluster analysis and basic demographic and economic indicators. We come to conclusion that old member states (those that accessed the EU before 2004) and new member states (those that accessed the EU after 2004) show different development of basic demographic indicators which suggests that convergence between these two groups is not likely to happen in the near future.

This article presents crucial results of realised sociological research "Perception of Sense of Security Degree of Karviná Citizens". The project was solved in cooperation with local government of city Karviná by Ph.D. students from Department of Social Sciences, Silesian University in Opava, School of Business Administration in Karviná under the expert tutelage of their supervisor. The article is divided into two chapters, the first chapter terminologically defines the issues of the subject and terms related to security and threats to citizens and enterprise. The second chapter discusses the methodology of realised questionnaire survey in the city of Karviná and it brings specific results and conclusions of the research. Subsequently accepted measures can help to increase the sense of security degree of the citizens in Karviná.

Tento článek prezentuje výsledky výzkumu Spokojenost občanů Českého Těšína se zdroji informací o městě, které bylo realizováno ve třetím a čtvrtém kvartálu roku 2010. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaké zdroje informací o městě Český Těšín využívají jeho občané a jak jsou s těmito zdroji spokojeni. Pro účely získání dat pro tento výzkum byla použita metoda dotazování (technika dotazníku). Respondenti byli dotazováni na využívání informačních zdrojů o městě (úřední deska, internetové stránky, informační centrum, zpravodaje) a na spokojenost s obsahem internetových stránek a zpravodaje Těšínské listy. Získaná data byla pomocí statistických metod analyzována a vyhodnocena. Výsledky a stěžejní závěry výzkumu popsané v tomto příspěvku byly již předány představitelům města Český Těšín. Na jejich základě mohou představitelé města svými rozhodnutími přispět ke zlepšení informovanosti občanů o městě a ke zkvalitnění využívaných informačních zdrojů.
